On last night, Funk Flex premiered new track from Drake, 'Draft Day', which sampled and paid homage to Lauryn Hill's classic, 'Doo Wop', produced by Boi-1da.
With Drake dropping 'Draft Day' on last night, listeners can't help
but conclude that some of the references in the track are directed at
non other than the big homie HOV.Breakdown of the timeline below
Back in February, Rolling Stone published their interview with Drake, where the YMCMB rapper was quoted as saying, “It’s like Hov can’t drop bars these days without at least four art references! I would love to collect at some point, but I think the whole rap/art world thing is getting kind of corny.”
Drake would later go on to blast Rolling Stone for publishing things he said off the record, as well as not giving him the cover he’d been promised…but he never actually denied saying these things, which also included an off-color comment about Kanye West.
Hov waited for the perfect time to clap back at Drake, while garnering the help of Jay Electronica for the 'We Made It' freestyle.
“Sorry Mr./Mrs. Drizzy [NOTE: there's been much debate over whether he's saying Mr. or Mrs.] for so much art talk,” Jay rapped on his “We Made It” freestyle. “Silly me rappin bout sh*t that I really bought. While these rappers rap about guns they ain’t shot…and a bunch of other silly sh*t that they ain’t got!”
Wasting no time, Drake came back on “Draft Day,” an ode to Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and Toronto’s Andrew Wiggins (Kansas Jaywalks) entering the NFL and NBA draft.
“I’m focused on makin’ records and gettin’ bigger. Just hits, no misses (Mrs.), that’s for the married folk!” Clearly, Drake heard “Mrs.” in Hov’s jab, LOL. I love how there’s no real beef here, though, just healthy sparring on wax – something the hip-hop game always needs!
Just to be sure the world knows there’s no real issue, Drake also added, “I think I’m on my eighth flow, just watch me paint flow. We all do it for the art, so I can never hate though.”
Somehow Chicago newcomer Chance The Rapper got caught in the crossfire, though it was nothing too serious and honestly will just help his name get even bigger.
“You should’ve followed all my moves, you won’t realize ’til after,” Drake rapped. “And if I left sh*t to chance I would’ve picked a name like Chance the Rapper. No offense ’cause I don’t know that n*gga…I’m focused on making records and getting bigger.”
Chance has yet to tweet anything in response, but not much of a response was warranted either. ::Shrugs:: You guys be the judge?
