Manchester United hit by six-week Carrick injury lay-off
The midfielder has been withdrawn from Roy Hodgson's England squad and is set to be out of action until Christmas after receiving treatment for an ongoing Achilles problem.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will be out for "four-to-six weeks" after undergoing treatment for a persisent Achilles injury, the club have confirmed.

The Red Devils man, who has also been suffering with niggling back trouble, has been withdrawn from Roy Hodgson's England squad to play Chile and Germany.

Carrick has received an injection by Carrington medical staff in order to reduce the inflammation surrounding his achilles and could now be out until the Christmas period.

"We can confirm that Michael Carrick will be out for [four-to-six] weeks with an Achilles injury," United wrote on their official Twitter account.

The midfielder's absence is a significant blow to David Moyes, who has relied heavily on the 32-year-old in United's troubled engine room. His options in the position have now been reduced to Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs and Anderson, with Darren Fletcher not yet at full match fitness as he continues to recover from an ongoing bowel condition.
MAN UNITED LATEST

It is understood that Carrick has been playing with the injury for a number of weeks and was, as such, rested for the Capital One Cup defeat of Norwich City at the end of October as well as United's trips to Fulham and Real Sociedad earlier in November.

The former Tottenham man has started 14 games for the champions so far this season, a record bettered only by David de Gea.

Carrick's club-mate, Danny Welbeck, has also withdrawn from the England squad, having failed to overcome the knee injury which has kept him out since United's 1-1 draw with Southampton on October 19.

Robin van Persie, who was due to face Japan and Colombia for the Netherlands in the coming days, has also withdrawn from international duty after Dutch medical staff assessed both groin and toe injuries to the striker.
