In is first Madaraka Day speech, President Uhuru said he will work on national unity create the Kenya “that we all desire” without which “we shall neither progress nor stand" saying corruption and impunity are a major hurdle to national progress.
“Some public servants have engaged in corruption on such a regular basis that it seems to have become acceptable. This must stop.” Corruption has not only degrades the moral fabric, but causes immense pain to citizens.
Most importantly, he said, corruption compromises the ability of government to provide effective and efficient services and jeopardises the future. The president said his government is keen on transforming the structure of our economy so as to create sustainable employment opportunities to the growing population. “The only sure way to fight poverty is to create wealth.”
The President said the shared aim is to end ethnic tensions and rivalry and to unite all citizens. “A united Kenya has tremendous potential for growth and development.” Uhuru said his government seeks to implement a more proactive and innovative approach in pursuing political and socio-economic interests globally.
